In 1948 the world’s first civilian four wheel drive car, the landrover series was launched. Maurice Wilks, chief designer for Rover Company conceived this vehicle as a solution to the problems faced by the company’s farm and mining customers, who needed a versatile off road machine that could do all their job well.
What is the benefit of Range Rover?
It took a little time before the prototype was ready for production, but when it did arrive on the market, it was met with a tsunami of interest from motoring journalists who had never seen such a thing before. It was also a major technological breakthrough compared to the two and four wheel drive vehicles available at that time, with a leaf-sprung suspension and selectable two or four wheel drive (4WD).
The first version was the 88in (2.2 m) short wheelbase SWB model and it had a 52 hp (39 kW) 2.0-litre petrol engine and an ancillary gearbox. Later versions of the Land Rover, including the 80″ and 86″ models, were introduced with a 72 hp (54 kW) 2.25-litre petrol engine.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Land Rover gained an enviable reputation as a tough, durable and hardy off-roader. They became an iconic symbol of Britishness, and have featured in many popular films and documentaries throughout the years.
Today, the Range Rover is one of the most respected off-road vehicles on the road. As the world moves into an increasingly eco-conscious future, the iconic Range Rover continues to lead the way for Land Rover. It is now the world’s largest selling SUV, with over 6 million units produced and still going strong.
