Game AI is most often used in the form of NPCs or nonplayer characters, whose behavior is determined by game AI algorithms. These NPCs add depth and complexity to a game, increasing its appeal for gamers. Game AI can also analyze player behavior and adjust the pacing of narrative reveals, puzzles, combat encounters and other elements to elegantly match the player’s engagement level, preventing boredom.

AI That Responds to Player Tone and Voice

A common goal for game designers today is to make AI more human or at least appear so. This is particularly important in genres like first-person shooter or action-adventure where realism and authenticity are key. For example, in the game Astronaut, players must interact with a series of astronauts that are simulated through a mix of communication tokens and scenario cards. This AI system is designed to mimic human speech and responses, which is vital for building an authentic and engaging world.

However, not everyone is sold on the idea of AI in video games. Audrey Millington, a veteran concept artist who has worked both as a freelancer and in-house at studios like Obsidian Entertainment (the creator of the narratively acclaimed Fallout series), is skeptical about the recent push toward using AI in gaming. She says that generative AI could eventually take the place of human writers who are able to craft high-concept stories with intricate character and scene design.
