Conservation and restoration of a historical Stupa in Sankar, Leh (2013-14)

Stupa Restoration - Sankar

A historical Stupa located along the footpath leading to Samkar monastery was restored by Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF) with financial support from Tourism Development Authority, Leh on request of Gey Lobzang Nantak, hon’ble cucillor, upper Leh. The Stupa was consecrated by the monks of Samkar Gonpa on 12th Oct. 2013. Shri Rigzin Spalbar, the hon’ble Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC was present on the occasion. CEC, Spalbar congratulated councillor, upper Leh, Yangtse Yargais Tsongspa, Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF), especially, Dr. Sonam Wangchok, Secretary HCHF for his visionary enterprise and selfless contribution towards the progress of the society and the region in the field of cultural preservation. CEC stressed on restoring and preserving ancestral stupas build with immense faith and blessings rather than going for building new ones as they speaks of our cultural identity and are heritage. He expressed happiness over the conservation work carried out to restore the stupa at Samkar. Earlier, Dr Sonam Wangchok, founder/Secretary, HCHF said that the conservation works were done by local experts with special care by using all local materials. “The restored stupa is a living, and under worship.  The Buddhist devotees worship and circumambulate the stupa as an act of merit but give very little attention on maintenance. Therefore, the timely conservation of the stupa was needed” said Dr Sonam Wangchok. Gey Nantak, councillor, upper Leh thanks Chief Executive Councillor for reviewing the conservation works and makes himself available on the occasion of the consecration. He also expressed gratitude to CEO, Tourism Development Authority, Leh for financial support and Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation for restoring the stupa. President, Yangtse Yargais Togspa, members and village elders were also present on the occasion
