A delegation led by Dr. Sonam Wangchok, Secretary HCHF, called on CEC, LAHDC and DC Leh with regards to conservation and preservation of historical monuments found all over Ladakh, and specially appeals for prevention of any damage or destruction caused to any built heritage in the course of modern infrastructural developments. The delegation especially drew attention towards prevalence of such practice in road widening projects. The presentation states that the tendency in most of the cases while carrying out any construction project is to replace the monuments, falling in the project site, with new ones that result in losing their history, religious and cultural values and heritage. The delegation also comprised President, Ladakh Cultural Forum, Tsering Nurbu Martse, General Secretary, Tashi Morup, Stanzin Dolker, LOTI and members of INTACH Ladakh Chapter Dr Thupstan Nurboo, Deskit Dolker, and Kunzes Dolma. Both DC and CEC gave assurances to take concrete measures towards protecting the monuments involving the stakeholders at every level and CEC urged upon the delegation to initiate the formulation of guidelines process in this regard under the aegis of prominent religious organizations.
The delegation also applauded the local administrative initiatives of having departmental and commercial sign boards in local language which is commendable not only in terms of improving effective communication at the grass root level but also Bhoti language promotion which is appealing to visitors coming from different parts of the country and from all over the world.
